All Hair Products Aren’t Equal – Two Key Ingredients to Avoid
Although there is an overwhelming amount of great smelling and affordably priced shampoos and conditioners, not all hair products are made equal. There are many challenges that we face on a day to day when it comes to our hair – oily scalp, drooping curls, frizzy coils or limp lack luster tresses. It all starts in the shower on wash day. When you get down to the nitty gritty, ingredients are the most crucial factors to take into account when choosing what products are best for your hair.
Sulfates are common amongst many brands because it’s the ingredient that create the lathering effect in the shower that strip oils from your scalp and hair. Unfortunately, this means that your hair is being stripped of its natural oils as well. Essentially, your scalp is being dehydrated; causing your scalp to excessively overproduce oils. This is exactly what we don’t want. When scalp oil production goes into overdrive, it causes you to have to wash your hair more frequently than usual. Sulfates have been known to damage hair over time and can also contain carcinogens.
Parabens are preservatives that are used to stop the growth of bacteria, fungi and mold within shampoos. The problem is, parabens also can cause scalp irritation and certain skin conditions or allergic reactions. Although gross at times, some bacteria and fungi are good and actually healthy for our skin. If parabens are eliminated, this introduces healthy haircare and promotes natural body oils that create the good bacteria that assists in the avoidance of autoimmune diseases such as eczema.
How do you find the best shampoo and conditioner for you and your hair? Trial and error is the best tactic for finding the products for you. Easier said than done; I know. Especially when trying to avoid becoming the dreaded “product junkie.” Testing out products can become quite expensive. Try reading about products beforehand and researching reviews. Ultimately, everyone’s hair is different and therefore, will respond differently to various products.
